Every 15 days or less you must form a caravan and take everythign you need, abandoning your old home, never to return. Others may join you, including any animal you tame/buy along the way. You may trade with others, but never stay with a friendly tribe for more than 1 night. the only way to win is to get to a ship in hibernation (Journey event), repair it, and escape in it.
